The date can be read by checking the windows above the hour markers; since there are 12 months in a year, it is simple to tell what month it’s from the place of the red month mark. Reading house time is straightforward as well; it is display by the rotating 24 hour ring which sits at the lower 2/3 of the dial (the triangle in 12:00 suggests that the hour). This has the advantage of showing whether it is AM or PM in your home. The annual calendar is linked to local time, which can be shown by the hour hand, so that the date shown (assuming you’ve set the time right forwards or backward for the new time zone) will be correct for your regional time zone. The overall fit and finish of this dial and case, incidentally, is very good; under magnification the dial markers, numbers and hands are all crisply defined, together with irreproachable attention to detail. Rolex’s situation and dial work is equally as uniformly excellent throughout its product lines as anything in the industry and what’s just as significant, this excellence is consistent from watch to watch, and contributes considerably to the favorable feeling Rolex watches normally seem to make. I’m always struck by this whenever I handle one for inspection — even with Rolex models I would not always wear on a daily basis myself, for reasons of taste or practicality or price, the overall sense of outstanding build quality one gets is extremely large, from the humblest Oyster Perpetual into the many opulent Day-Date. Among the most essential methods by which any luxury brand can keep faith with its customers is in paying as much attention to the details in its cheapest goods as in its most expensive, and Rolex is one of the very few watch companies I have written about over time, for this has always appeared to be authentic.

The machine is undoubtedly mechanically complex, but it’s quite straightforward and simple in use. It’s possible to feel the position of the bezel as you move it thanks to very pleasantly engineered detents at every one of the setting positions, and the entire system isn’t only gratifying to work with, but a great deal of fun also, and certainly unlike anything you will find from another brand. You also receive a lot cleaner instance than you would if there were outside pushers for placing the calendar or the local time, and increased ease of use than if you’d like to use a stylus for recessed pushers. On both events that I’ve needed a Sky-Dweller from Rolex to get a test drive, I’ve been in a position to select the watch on a test flight — this time, a quick business trip to London. Setting up the watch was quite simple, and, as I’ve mentioned, fun as well. As I expected, in white and steel gold the Sky-Dweller feels very different from the blunt opulence of this Everose model, and as it’s lighter than the all white gold variant, it definitely appears less ostentatious. I don’t know that the Sky-Dweller would feel particularly utilitarian even in steel-only (though I think it would be good to have an all steel version of the watch) as it’s too big, and too brightly polished to project the tool-watch bluntness of some other Rolex sports models, but you certainly do not feel like mogul’d upward as you would with something in yellow gold or Everose. And needless to say, the white and steel gold model is virtually completely steel anyway.Putting on the Rolesor edition of this Sky-Dweller has been a really different experience from placing on the Everose variation I wore for our last Week On The Wrist with this particular model. The Rolesor variation on a costume, as a result of the generally less extroverted character, feels like me personally, and can, I guess, feel to anybody who travels mostly for business rather than pleasure, much lower secret; it is a much less a status-in-the-lounge and a standing-in-line-at-a-security-checkpoint kind of opinion (and I mean that in a good way).

However, I don’t believe the purpose of the Sky-Dweller is to be the easiest answer to a particular need. Like the Yachtmaster II, the Sky-Dweller fills a very special niche by filling a sensible need with virtually hyperbolic sophistication on every level possible, both mechanically, and by a materials and layout standpoint; and such as the Yachtmaster II, it’s a very special spin on a very special complication.I think that is what makes both watches work, and also what makes them both so appealing in everyday usage. They have a fairly extroverted layout, together with a fairly idiosyncratic take on a complication with fairly particular appeal (the regatta timer on the 1 hand, the combination of an annual calendar and two time zones around another). What they are, nevertheless — and what I probably would not have discovered about the Sky-Dweller without consuming it and playing with it for a week — would be an enormous quantity of pleasure, and in a way that cuts into the core of the appeal of mechanical watches at its most basic level. The lavishness of the externals, in conjunction with the elaborate complexity of their mechanics relative to the practical problems they address, are essential to making them what they are; after all, to a great extent, discovering joy in mechanics for its own sake is a big part of what’s pleasure with horology is about. As George Daniels place it in a different context, “the simple fact that the mechanism is quite unnecessary only adds to its charm.”
